What is a word process? |
A word processor is a special purpose computer program, typically used to set text to type |
|
It was probably one of the first tasks ever put onto a computer and has now almost competely replaced the original means of setting word to print. |
|
|
Word processing has gone well beyond its original task of simply replacing typweriters |
|
|
Todays WP contains many features once found only in more advanced programs. Features like: |
|
Color printing Multiple fonts Multi - window applications Calculators Spread sheet features Database techniques Image /photo manipulations |
|
|
WP is such an important function on a PC that nearly every application uses some feature of WP |
|
|
Probably the most common feature is that of EDITING |
|
|
Uses of a WP:
|
Letters Memos Notes Labels Newsletters Small filing systems |
|
But what is a file? |
A file is a collection of similar or related data |
A book could be thought of as a file |
|
A letter to your neighbor could be thought of as a file |
|
All these are files and files are how your computer holds data on its storage devices |

Starting word: |
Windows has a numbers of ways of running programs |
|
Under Windows 3.1 |
Start windows |
Open the group containing MS WORD |
|
Double click on the WORD icon |
|
|
Under Windows 95 |
Click the start button |
Move to the MS Office entry |
|
Shift to the next menu |
|
Select the MS Word icon and click |
|
|
Identifying the parts of the Word Window |
At the top is the title bar directly below that is the menu bar |
From left to right is the FILE...HELP |
|
|
Next is the formatting toolbar or sometimes called the ribbon |
|
This bar contains the most common font and format commons |
|
|
Next is the "Standard" Toolbar |
|
This toolbar gives a list of quick editting options such as copy, cut and paste |
|
|
Any other toolbar present is optional and will depend on what the user did last |
|
In this area you will finds toolbars like outline bars |
|
Image bars |
|
Box and color bars |
|
|
This and all toolbars are configurable and removable - they’re even mobile |
|
|
You may have a ruler bar next |
|
|
The large window below is the desktop or work place for WORD |
|
|
Below that you’ll find a series of shortcut buttons that will present your document in diffent "views" - we’ll come back to view in a little while |
|
|
Finally you come to the status bar |
|
The status bar contains information on the document that currently has focus - and more specifically, where the cursor is located in the document |
|
|
Working with documents: |
All word files, regardless of their extensions, are referred to as documents.
|
|
Creating a new document |
click on "FILE" |
click on "NEW" |
|
in the Title bar you’ll now see the temporary name of your new file "Document #" |
|
in the desktop you’ll will now have a blank form - ready for input |
|
|
Locating a document |
click on "FILE" |
trace the FILE menu to the bottom |
|
here is a selection of the last X number of Recently Used Files. The value here is variable and under the users command (from 0 to 9) |
|
click on the file you wish to edit |
|
|
Opening a existing doc: |
If the file you wish to use is not in the Recently Used Files List, then |
click on "FILE" |
|
click on "OPEN" |
|
a dialogue box now opens showing you a selection of files in the current directory |
|
if this is not the correct drive - change the drive first |
|
then change the directory to that which you want |
|
then select the specific file |
|
|
If you can’t remember the name of your file there are still other ways of locating it |
|
click on "FILE" |
|
click on "FIND FILE" |
|
click on "ADVANCED SEARCH" |
|
click on the "LOCATION" tab |
|
select the drive and directory to start your search |
|
click the "ADD" button |
|
toggle on "include sub directories" |
|
click on the "SUMMARY" tab |
|
fill in the areas that you know will be found in your document |
|
click "OK" |
|
click "OK" |
|
click "search" |
|
select your file from the list presented,you can view each file in miniture as you search |
|
