Setting up and Configuring Trumpet Winsock on Windows 3.1

Configuring Trumpet Winsock can be the most difficult part of setting up a connection with Surfari.Net. It is, however, the most important.

Installing Trumpet Winsock

• Once you have downloaded Trumpet Winsock, you will have to 'unzip' the file to its own directory. You can use PKUNZIP or Winzip. See the appropriate documentation if you don't know how to do this. Some versions of Trumpet come as a self-extracting file as well, example: TWSKPPP.EXE - this can be extracted by typing the file name at your command line in the directory of your choice.
• When you have the Trumpet Winsock files ready, you can create an icon in the Windows Program Manager to start it by using File,New,Browse, and then locating the tcpman.exe file in the directory that you previously unzipped it to.

Configuring Trumpet Winsock

The first time you start TCPMAN, a setup screen will appear. Only a few values need to be changed from the defaults.

1. IP Address: 198.6.245.100
2. Name Server: 207.114.135.2 MTU: 1500
3. SLIP Port: This should be set to the COM port of your modem.
4. Baud Rate: This should be set to the maximum baud rate of your modem.
5. PPP Enabled (checked) For your PPP Connection

You will have to restart TCPMAN for these options to take effect.

Using Trumpet Winsock

First, you must learn to log in using TCPMAN. There are basically two ways to do this. You can log in and out manually, or use a script. The option for Automatic Login and Logout is recommended to run scripts (see below).

Manual Logins

Logging in manually is very similar to the process you may use now. Follow this process:

• Start TCPMAN
• Select DIALER...MANUAL LOGIN
• Enter "atdt 331-1600" and press enter.
• When you are prompted to do so, enter your username and password.
• You will now see a screen fill with odd characters, don't be alarmed, this is normal.
• You may now start your Web Browser or any program for exploring the Internet.

Manual Logouts

When you are finished, you should use the following procedures to close the connection to Surfari.Net.

• Close ALL Winsock clients except TCPMAN (Trumpet Winsock).
• In the TCPMAN window, select the script bye.cmd, this will terminate your PPP connection to your ISP.
• When you have logged, you may close TCPMAN.

Scripts

To make thing easier, you may use scripts to automate login. Refer to the Trumpet documentation to write you own, or use the example(s) posted from the User Services Page.

Using the Scripts

• Before you use the other scripts, you should run SETUP.CMD. You can do this by selecting DIALER...SETUP.CMD. Answer the questions and it will store the data for the login script. If you do not wish to have your username and password stored on your computer, you may skip these questions and the login script will ask you for them each time you log in.
• Each time you want to log in, start TCPMAN.
• Run the Login script by clicking on DIALER...LOGIN.
• When the script successfully completes, you may start your Winsock clients.
• When you are finished, you should close all Winsock clients except TCPMAN.
• In the TCPMAN window, click on DIALER...BYE.
• When You have been logged off Surfari.Net, you may close the TCPMAN window.
