News Groups
  1. About News Groups
    1. News Group readers normally come bundled with "Email" programs.
    2. They operate about the same as Email Programs. The screens look similar.
    3. Getting Started (Make sure your are connected with the ISP)
    1. Go the browser or Email program "Windows" in the menu bar and click on "News"
    2. A screen will appear similar to the "Mail" screen.
    3. Set up your News Group reader as follows:

      4. a. "Options" on the menu bar click on "Show Active News Groups", "Show All Messages", "Add From Newest Messages".

    4. On the left side of the screen, double click on the news service listed.
    1. The computer will download three basic news groups normally.
    2. They are"news.announce.newusers", "news.newusers.questions", and "news.answeres" without the quotes. We suggested that you double click and download the messages because they give details for navigating news groups.
    1. Select a topic that you are interested in from "news.newusers.questions" and click on "File" in the menu bar and click on "Add Newsgroup" and fill in the address as detailed in the "news.newusers.questions". The computer will download the latest messages.
    1. Run a test message the button "To News" and a screen similar to the "mail" screen will appear with the news group already typed in.
    2. Go to "Options" in the menu bar and select "Deferred Delivery".
    3. Type the message that you want to send and click on "Send" on the tool bar.
    4. The "Send News" screen will disappear and the main news screen will appear.
    5. Go to "File" on the menu bar and click "Send Messages In Outbox"
    6. To see the message that you have posted on the newsgroup, go to "File" on the menu bar and click on "Get More Messages".
    1. Your sent message will appear at the bottom of the list of messages for that newsgroup.
    1. Now, go to "File" in the menu bar and click on "Add News Group".
    1. Type in "soc.retirement" without the quotes.
    2. The computer will download the messages for the retirement news group.
    3. This news group was found in "news.announce.newsusers" without the quotes.
    1. Your messages will be automatically deleted from the news group after a certain amount of time. However, if you received responses from your chat, it is best to cancel the message
    1. Click on the message that you want to delete.
    2. Go to "Edit" on the menu bar.
    3. Click on "Cancel Message".
    1. If you want to return to your Email, or your "browser" go to "Window" and click on the appropriate item.
