About Email Programs
- Many programs available
- The programs are generally free from shareware Internet sites
- General types:
- Those bundled with Internet browsers
- The program that comes with Windows
- The programs that stand alone which some prefer due to unique features such as multiple Email address capability.
- Bundled with Netscape
- You must set options before use.
- Go to "Options" on tool bar.
- Click on Mail and News Preferences
- Click on "Appearance Tab" recommend not change.
- Click on "Composition Tab"
- Go to "By Default Copy Outgoing Messages To:" and fill out the "Data Path" for both "Mail" and "News".
- Example on your computer if you go backwards might be:
- C: windows\qfnonl\nscape16\mail\sent
- Netscape sometimes sets up the data path for "Mail" for you but you have to set up the "News" data path.
- Click on "Servers"
- In the "Mail" section put in your ISP's mail server name for "SMTP" and "POP". The ISP will give this information to you.
- "SMPT" and "POP" normally are "mail.xxx.xxx which is the last section of your Email address such as name.dayton.net.
- In the "POP User Name" line put your Email address.
- "Mail Directory" normally placed here by Netscape.
- "Maximum Message Size" lease as is.
- "Messages are copied from server…" Make sure the "Removed from the server" box is checked.
- "Check for Mail" best to click on "Never".
- "News" section of the screen under "News (NNTP) server put in your "News" server name as given to you by the ISP. It is normally the same as the mail server but with "news" placed before the server name instead of mail. For example: news.dayton.net.
- "The "News Rc Directory" should be placed there by Netscape.
- "Get" leave as is.
- Click on "Identity"
- Put in information as required.
- The "Signature File" contains personal information that will travel with your Email message. Open the program "WordPad" and type the information in the screen such as name and Email address and "Save As (personal.txt) without the brackets in the same directory as Netscape. Now, type in the data path to your "personal.txt" file for example C:\programs\nscape\personal.txt
- Click on "Organization" and check the "Remember Mail Password" box. In addtion, customize the rest of the "Organization" as you see fit. This is how your incoming messages will be organized.
- Click "OK"
- Make sure that you are connected with the ISP.
- To receive maiL CLICK ON "Get Mail" the status of the incoming Email will be shown on the bottom of the screen and when finished, the messages will be shown in the right hand screen.
- To save an Email address click on "Message" on the menu bar and go to "Add to Address Book" and click "OK" because Netscape adds the address for you.
- Sign off the connection because you can read mail after it is downloaded to your computer.
- "Delete" if you want to delete a message, high light it and click "Delete". Netscape will set up a "Trash" folder for you where the deleted message will go. Clean out "Trash" periodically.
- "To Mail" click here to send a message. An Email message screen will appear.
- Click on the "Mail To" bar next to the address line and the address book will appear.
- High light the address that you want and click on "To" and click "OK".
- If the address isn't in the address book, type in the address that you want.
- Fill out remaining blanks
- Click on "Options" on the menu bar and look at "Immediate Delivery" and "Deferred Deliver" and my advise is to check "Deferred Delivery".
- Click on the "Send" button on the tool bar and the message will go into the "Out Box" on the main mail screen.
- If you want to reply to a message that you receive, click on "Re.Mail" and the "Mail To" screen will pop up with the address already in it.
- If you want to reply to everyone that the message was sent to, except for "Listservs" click on "Re.All" and the "Mail To" screen will opo with with all of the address already there.
- If you want to forward this message to someone who did not receive it, click on "Forward" and the "Mail To" screen will pop up. You will have to address it yourself. The message becomes an attachment to the Email so you are able to type in your own message to accompany the forwarded mail.
- To send mail from the "Outbox" reconnect with your ISP, click on "File" on the menu bar and click on "Send Messages In Outbox". Recommend that you "Get Mail" as long as your are reconnected.
- Making a filing cabinet when you want to save messages.
- Go the "File" on the menu bar and go to "New Folder" DO NOT GO TO ADD FOLDER
- Type in the name of the folder and it will appear in the left screen.
- Drag the message that you want to save to the "New Folder".
- "Note" When called by Netscape "Compress Files" click yes.
